Anurag Kashyap has often been compared to the iconic Quentin Tarantino, a comparison endorsed by Ronnie Screwala in his book, “Dream with Your Eyes Open.” This analogy rings true. Tarantino is renowned for crafting a distinct cinematic language, revolutionizing storytelling and captivating audiences worldwide. Kashyap, similarly, has established a unique voice, leaving anundeniable impact on the film landscape.

Anurag Kashyap has been a trailblazer in Indian cinema, striving to create a distinct cinematic language. His early films like Paanch, Black Friday, and No Smoking garnered critical acclaim and introduced audiences to his raw and uncompromising style. The breakthrough came with Dev.D in 2009, which redefined Bollywood conventions and catapulted him into the limelight. By breaking away from traditional storytelling, Kashyap cultivated a dedicated fan base eager to embrace his unconventional narratives.
I first encountered Anurag Kashyap on the set of Shool, his debut writing venture. I was working as an assistant cinematographer on this project, which was filmed in Bettiah and Motihari, Bihar. Directed by Eshwar Nivas and starring Manoj Bajpai and Raveena Tandon, the film was a challenging undertaking. Despite being a writer, Anurag was deeply involved in the production process, a testament to his unbridled passion for cinema.

Subsequently, Anurag transitioned into directing films. Over the years, I’ve shared numerous story ideas with him. Despite his hectic schedule, he always made time to listen, provide insightful feedback, and offer valuable suggestions.
Anurag is a remarkably well-rounded individual with a vast knowledge of literature, film, and the world. His experiences have imbued him with a unique energy that sets him apart. While I’ve worked with numerous directors and writers, Anurag possesses a special charisma. Perhaps it’s this same magnetic quality that has captivated the media and made him such a prominent figure. 😉.
